Asian Beauties or Asian Date?

Right out of the gate, AsianBeauties.com got off to a bad start. Upon entering the URL, my browser immediately redirected me to AsianDate.com. I have a natural distrust when websites do this.

Legitimate dating sites find a name and stick with it. You can’t build a brand and then ditch your name. It’s possible this was simply a situation where a larger website bought the URL of an up-and-comer, but for the less reputable dating sites out there, name changes are often ways to escape a bad reputation.

It was too early to say whether the name change was a bad sign, but I was immediately suspicious.

There are better options out there you should try

Asian Beauties makes a good first impression

If AsianBeauties had changed their name as part of a general design makeover, it was a good one. The landing page included a photo of a white man and an Asian woman taking a selfie together, a chaste image compared to most sites. In fact, the lack of explicit photos and demands for account upgrades immediately set AsianBeauties apart.

On the main page, they had a simple graphic of the Asian continent in red behind the logo. The logo, done in red cursive, was tasteful but distinctive, showing obvious concern for design touches many other sites ignore.

Once I had created an account, there were a few well laid out featured profiles and some basic menu options. The site was uncomplicated and appealing to the eyes.

Unfortunately, after perusing a bit longer, my initial positive feelings dampened.

A site for only men?

I noticed the AsianBeauties tab on my internet browser had text about meeting “beautiful Asian women.” This got me thinking. Does it say that for everyone on this site, including the women? I started wondering why all the site’s advertising seemed catered to men. Don’t they need women to join as well?

One major thing I look for in dating sites is the gender ratio. How many women have joined the site compared to men? I couldn’t find exact numbers on this site, but I got a strong impression that there were a lot more men than women on the site. The women who were there seemed to be there for something other than just a casual date.

Are these Asian Beauties the real deal?

The women on the site were, almost exclusively, actual residents of Asia (as opposed to being Asian-American, as I had assumed many would be). They were from China, South Korea, and other countries I’d love to visit, but maybe not for a first date.

After reviewing a few profiles, it was pretty clear few if any spoke English. That would pose a challenge for me, but I’m sure plenty of bilingual men could make such a relationship work. Bigger issues became more apparent, though, when I dug deeper into the profile descriptions. The hobbies and interests all felt a tad fake. Also, the personal bios read like they were filled out to hit a few specific keywords.

Plenty of people would be happy to find love on the other side of Pacific Ocean, but it’s certainly not going to be a normal dating process. It’s going to involve considerable online communication, phone calls, maybe some video chatting. If all that goes well, an expensive plane ticket or two will be necessary.

If you’re going to invest in all of that, you really should guarantee the woman on the other side is an authentic person.

Asian Beauties come at a price

The site seems oddly indifferent to the complicated logistics of dating someone halfway across the globe. The emphasis is entirely on getting you chatting with a girl, any girl. As I browsed, a bunch of chats were popping up on the right side of my screen. One simply said, “i apply to get into your life, ok?”

Next to the chats were links to live cam pages where I could chat with a woman over video. It didn’t surprise me to find none of those features were free. I couldn’t chat, let alone make video calls, without signing up for a paid account, and those were all quite expensive.

Clearly, this was AsianBeauties.com’s method. They make it easy (and enticing) to make an initial connection with someone (possibly a bot or employee) and then they make you pay to continue.

Weirdly, there was also a lot of pressure to buy “gifts” for the women. Stranger still, they utilized third-party services to help arrange in-person dates, but they don’t let you do any of that yourself. I read it in their terms and conditions:

"You may not include in Your correspondence with other members any URLs, email addresses or telephone and fax numbers."

All arrangements have to be made through outside sources, and those sources cost a pretty penny.

It’s not all about money

When I looked into the fine print on AsianBeauties.com, I noticed it’s not just their communications policies that are sketchy:

"Member agrees that AsianDate shall solely, exclusively and perpetually own all right, title and interest to the Content posted by Member on the Website, and shall have the rights to distribute, license, sub-license, market, promote, exhibit and otherwise exploit all rights therein in perpetuity, throughout the universe, in all languages and in all media formats."

It goes on and on in that legal language. They basically explained all the ways in which they will broadcast your picture and messages if they find them to be profitable. I appreciate the heads-up, I guess, but I have no interest in AsianBeauties (or AsianDate) using my personal information.

Reading that fine print made me wonder how many of the photos on AsianBeauties.com had been stolen. For that matter, how many unsuspecting members had had their personal information taken and sold to some third party?

A strange social media presence

One of my first moves when checking out a dating service is to look at their Facebook page. The absence of a Facebook page or any other substantial social media presence is always a bad sign. Social media can give a glimpse into a dating service’s methodology and business model.

AsianBeauties.com’s Facebook page, listed as AsianDate, was a bit odd.

The page included video montages with silly songs in the background. They had posts featuring awkwardly posed women with text like, “Asian women are mysterious? When dating an Asian girl, you will need to take a lead in talking with her. Sometimes you will see a smile on her face instead of an answer.” They included as a hashtag “#DatingAdvice.”

I’m happy to give a little bit of my own dating advice: Don’t bother with AsianBeauties.com, it won’t help you find love on any continent.

Asian Beauties doesn’t provide a beautiful experience

AsianBeauties was a strange, hokey, and downright sketchy experience. Some sites look seedy and gross from the get-go, but this one had me going for a bit with their beautiful logo and nice layout. Unfortunately, they are definitely running some sort of weird, money-making, photo-stealing scheme.

Like far too many sites, AsianBeauties.com is just hoping that well-intentioned men will sign up with high hopes of meeting true love. Then they’ll milk their members for all they’re worth.

Online dating isn’t easy. So it’s important to give yourself all the best tools. That means taking good profile pictures, writing a stellar bio, and choosing the best dating sites. Whether they’re AsianBeauties or AsianDate, this site is a broken tool.
