How to Unmatch With Someone on Tinder | Guide With Pictures

Are you looking to learn how to unmatch on Tinder?

Tinder is a very popular online dating app that puts you in touch with hundreds–if not thousands– of people in your local area to find hookups, companionship, and long-term romance.

With numbers like these, it’s no surprise that you will run into people who are just not right for you. Don’t like talking to your match anymore? Or have they crossed some boundaries? Do you think they might be misrepresenting themselves? No worries, you can unmatch them and even report them if necessary.

Here’s how you unmatch someone on Tinder step by step:

  • Step 1: Launch the Tinder app on your device.
  • Step 2: Log in to your account, if you're not already logged in.
  • Step 3: On the main screen, tap on the "Chat" icon at the bottom right corner.

  • Step 4: Locate the conversation with the person you want to Unmatch and tap on the conversation to open the chat window.
  • Step 5: In the top right corner of the chat window, tap on the shield icon.

  • Step 6: A menu will appear on the bottom with 4 options:
  • Unmatch from [Name]

  • Report [Name]
  • Access Safety Center

  • Step 7: Tap on "Unmatch".
  • Step 8: A dialog box will open asking you to confirm that you want to unmatch this person.

  • Step 9: If you're sure, tap on "Yes, Unmatch". The person will then be removed from your matches, and you will not be able to message each other.

Note: If there’s a bug and the Unmatch doesn’t go through, you may need to contact Tinder directly through the “CONTACT US: Help & Support” option located in the Settings menu, and then navigate to “Safety & Reporting”. Tinder takes the safety and security of its users very seriously, so you may have to resort to contacting them directly for immediate results.

Additionally, scammers tend to make the app less fun (and drain your SuperLikes), so escalating an Unmatch to Report their profile helps make the app better for all users.

Of course, you probably have some questions about this process, so let’s briefly cover what happens when you unmatch on Tinder, whether a Tinder unmatch is sent to a user, and how to unmatch on Tinder without messaging someone.

What Happens When You Unmatch Someone on Tinder?

Once you unmatch someone on Tinder, their profile will not appear in your chat list anymore, nor will they appear when you continue swiping.

It is already hard to get matches on Tinder, so make sure you really want to Unmatch with the person before following through with these steps. For profiles that you may want to contact in the future (ie. you found a girlfriend but you’re not entirely sure she’s long-term material), Unmatching isn’t the best option. Instead, simply leave them in your chat window if you’ve exchanged messages, or leave them in your New Matches slider if you decide to contact them sometime in the future.

Therefore, you will only want to Unmatch if you’re absolutely sure that this is a profile that you don’t want to ever contact on Tinder again.

Does Tinder Tell Them They Were Unmatched?

No, Tinder does not send a notification to the other person when you unmatch them.

This may come as a relief to some users–particularly if you’re dealing with someone you were chatting with but they weren’t your type, sent too many provocative messages, or you found someone else who suited you better.

However, it’s fairly easy to tell if you’ve been Unmatched, Blocked, or even Reported on the app with a little common sense. Here’s why: The person you unmatched with will no longer be able to see the conversation or your profile in their matches or messages, which may lead them to realize that they've been unmatched.

Just like many dating scenarios, you may want to just let things fizzle out on Tinder until the person gets the hint. While Tinder and other dating apps act as a buffer of safety for interacting with strangers, you still need to err on the side of caution.

Can You Unmatch Someone on Tinder without Messaging?

Yes, you can unmatch someone on Tinder without messaging them. Once you match with someone, you have the option to unmatch them at any time. Here is how you can do it:

  • Step 1: Open the chat with the person you want to unmatch. For someone that you’ve matched with, this would appear on the top slider of New Matches
  • Step 2: Tap on the blue shield icon at the top right of the screen.
  • Step 3: Choose the "Unmatch" option.
  • Step 4: You'll then be asked to confirm this because unmatching is permanent and you won't be able to see their profile or contact them again on Tinder.

There are plenty of reasons why you’d want to unmatch someone without messaging. For example, Tinder is notorious for attracting scam profiles, so if it’s a scam, you can ensure that you never exchanged any info or interact with them at all.

Can You Match with Someone You Unmatched Again?

Once you unmatch someone on Tinder, the action is irreversible. You will not be able to communicate with them through the app, view their profile, or match with them again.

However, there is a slight possibility you may come across their profile again if they delete their account and create a new one. Similarly, if you decide to delete your account and start again, their profile could potentially show up in your stack assuming they still have an active account. This is not a guaranteed way to match with someone again and is generally not advised since it requires deleting and recreating accounts, which can also result in the loss of other matches and messages.

Additionally, Tinder's terms of service do have restrictions in place around deleting and recreating accounts to manipulate matches. Violate these policies and you may find yourself permanently banned!
